Dojo Offline Toolkit: the beta release is

Announced in January, Dojo Offline Toolkit is one of those projects that immediately fascinated me: a visionary and pragmatic, DOT responds to a real problem (the web offline) with excellent solutions. I also explained the DOT in a previous post .

The indefatigable Brad Neuberg has released a first beta yesterday. I personally would call the alpha version as there are still problems to solve:
- only platforms MacOS X and Windows (except Vista) are supported to date
- many bugs remain to be solved
- layer by Persits Javascript needs to become more independent Dojo

Despite all this, we must salute the performance and do not hesitate to start the tests (and report bugs) on this technology under the BSD license and frankly very promising.

Google "PowerPoint" means the return of Java on the web? 5 reasons

The web is something so rich that he regularly finds old techniques as a solution to new uses:
- thus we have rediscovered, 3 years ago, Javascript interfaces to enrich
- that Flash becomes an acceptable solution for many problems
- and Java could repoint the tip of his nose thanks to Google

Let me explain. Google has recently explained that his house powerpoint (planned for the summer) would use a technology came from a box bought recently ( Tonic Systems). The site of the box in question has disappeared, but the Google cache (!) Tells us that these people offered a Java API to make the powerpoint.

And then, you say? And then I tell you, it could be that using very Java (client side) is an excellent solution for:
- firstly, do offline / online
- secondly, to facilitate a number of functions that are difficult for web users such as copying images.

If everything I say were true, it could mark the return of Java very interesting at the time of RIA ... And no play Irma me too badly so far, so I try my luck!

HTML 5 to watch more closely

It appears that Internet-readers are fond of lists of all kinds. Canvasser at my hours, I bow to exercise today without forgetting my priesthood to engage surfers stranded here a real informative value.

Before listing a few words of introduction: HTML5, also called "Web 1.0 applications" is a proposal by the WHATWG (think tank web very listened to the original example of the system of persistent cookies in Firefox 2.0) to succeed HTML4/XHTML1. HTML5 is a totally different from XHTML2, which covers the current work of W3C on the subject.

HTML5, therefore, is a real exciting thing, for at least 5 reasons:

- HTML5 is pragmatic
the WHATWG not advocating revolution but an evolution that will keep compatibility with current practices Web developers today. It often annoys the purists but it can move forward.

- HTML5 is ambitious
may be pragmatic but ambitious with tags like canvas to achieve graphics or javascript datagrid element that would solve a persistent problem for Ajax developers.

- HTML5 is open to contributions
WhatWG's work are open to all contributions (including yours ?)... unlike those of the W3C.

- HTML5 is designed for the web tomorrow
HTML5 tries to answer a large number of modern uses of HTML: multimedia content, web applications, or exchanges between users. HTML5 bears in that final break with the language of HTML data structuring what was originally. XHTML2 is rather the opposite direction by trying to clean HTML from its inconsistencies with its original principles.

- HTML5 is followed by those who make the web
Mozilla, Opera, Apple has recently and very formally requested to use the W3C WhatWG work as a basis for reflection for the new HTML. .. in parallel while implementing certain proposals (such as canvas) without waiting for any approval of the latter!

Ext, OpenAjax: planet Ajax organized

A caress of sweet dreams more or less consciously the full Ajax developers is to have javascript libraries organized, flexible and responsive to Standards minimizing compatibility issues. Far from thinking that this Grail can be achieved in the short term, it is with pleasure that I announced the launch of the beta Ext.

Ext is a library which, in its original, extended core Yahoo UI to make available a number of handy widgets (calendars, tabs, sliders ...). Well-architected, the library could be quickly adapted to dispense YahooUI kernel to replace the excellent JQuery or the famous couple Protoype + scriptaculous.

has Ext To date twenty widgets of high quality, but also and above all excellent documentation taking full advantage of ext. Beyond performance, is the effort of genericity / modularity of the authors of this library makes me optimistic for the future.

This seems part of a broader movement to streamline the small world Ajax. Another telling fact of this movement, the OpenAjax Alliance is coming out of the impasse in which I thought she was:
- Google and Microsoft have recently joined
- the OpenAjax Hub , a set of specifications respect for Ajax libraries
produced by members of the Alliance, is about to release version 1.0

It is quite happy to see ajax mature at the time alternatives to RIA multiplien t and where the editors give a heck to bring developers to AJAX technology.
